Sudden Cardiac Arrest stops the heart, so CPR is critical to keep the blood flowing while an AED is being located and placed on the victim. Hands-Only CPR education and training is a critical component to the Cardiac Change of Survival. We're fortunate in our community that the Olathe Fire Department provides free Hands-Only CPR training in our community, as well as CPR Certification.
Being able to locate an AED in a cardiac emergency is critical, and even more critical is being confident in using the life-saving device. Again, our Olathe Fire Department includes AEDs in their training programs, and they're also partnered directly with PulsePoint to help our community locate and use AEDs in cardiac emergencies. Research shows 1 in 300 youth have an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The underlying condition is something you’re born with (often inherited) and/or can develop as young hearts grow. We highly recommend youth heart screenings that include an EKG and echocardiogram performed under the guidance of pediatric cardiologists.
